You may be rockin' a protective style; box braids, kinky twists or maybe crochet braids for the rest of Stay Home; Stay Healthy order. No matter your choice, there are a few things to keep in mind to get the most out of your protective styles and maintain the health of your hair. let’s talk about what a protective style is! What’s a Protective Style? In short, they’re styles that require little to no daily manipulation. The reason they’re “protective” is because the less touching and manipulation, the less chance of breakage. You greatly reduce split ends and possible breakage by tucking away your ends which are the oldest parts of your hair and more prone to damage.
1. Cleanse Your Scalp
There are a number of methods for cleansing while protective styling but here’s a few suggestions: In an applicator bottle, dilute your shampoo with a bit of water, apply directly to the scalp, gently massage and rinse with warm water. Another way to cleanse the scalp with out shampooing is to us witch hazel, does a great job of removing buildup without stripping the hair of its natural oils. Pour about two ounces into a small plastic dish, use q-tip or micro fiber cloth to rub into scalp.
3. Keep Hair Moisturized
Protective styles do help cut down on your morning routine because you don’t have to fiddle with your hair as much. But it is important to regularly moisturize your hair and scalp if you want your protective style to do its job. The purpose of a "protective style is to grow your hair! In this video T'keyah uses Mahogany Soul's,cocoa bean Nappy Butter and shows us what oils she uses to moisturize and clarify her scalp(Hemp Oil, Olive Oil, Tea Tree). Used few times a week will help keep your scalp healthy and your hair soft. Our Juju oil can also be used, I recommend Juicy mango, as it contains tea tree and lavender to soothe and calm the scalp. Taking your hair down will be that much easier if your hair is well-moisturized.
4. Protect at Bedtime
Unless you sleep on a satin pillowcase, wrapping your hair in a satin lined cap or silk scarf or bonnet - not cotton, which will suck the moisture out of your hair. Satin lining will help prevent unnecessary loss of moisture.
