Why Is My Hair Thinning? 5 Tips to Restore Thinning Hair

According to the American Hair Loss Association, hair loss affects one in five Americans  and of those affected 20% are women under 40. 

Before we jump right into strengthening your hair, let’s step back and look at the scientific reasons why hair thins in the first place, you know I'm a natural hair nerd.  A normal head of hair has about 100,000 hairs during its active stage, whereas, a thinning head has about half that. There are 4 stages hair growth: the anogen stage; active growth, the catogen stage; transitional stage the telogen stage or the resting phase and the final stage is the  extogen or shedding stage. For this article, we will focus on the extogen phase. As the body ages it’s normal for hair to remain in the extogen where hair begins to thin. However, if you are still young and healthy and your hair is thinning keep reading.  

Stress is one of the main factors of non- menopausal or male pattern baldness related hair loss.    Dr. Marc Glashofer, MD, a New York City dermatologist explains stress related hair loss this way:  “When you have a really stressful event, it can shock the hair cycle, (pushing) more hair into the shedding phase”.   Although age is a much less avoidable factor, it’s important to understand that as you age, nutrition and hormones change drastically.  After 50 thinning hair actually protects the body by preserving other more essential areas of your body with hormonal related functions.

1. Seek Medical Advice

If you've been to the salon, you know I always say seek medical advice first. Some hair loss has nothing to do with any factors above, but require medical advice. Seeking the professional expertise of a dermatologist is necessary to rule out serious medical conditions that could be the underlying cause of your thinning hair.

2. Scalp Message

If you’re starting to see your strands thinning, consider trying this simple at-home strategy: scalp massage, which promotes hair growth. “Gentle massaging of the scalp can increase blood flow to the hair follicle, the root of the hair, which is the only living part of the hair,” Abraham Armani, MD, medical director of Armani Medical Hair Restoration in Dallas.

Frequently putting a product on your scalp to quickly relieve the itching or dryness, can be short term relief, however massage stimulates the penetration of the product to reach your hair follicles.   A properly done scalp massage can increase blood circulation to the hair follicles, increase relaxation, decrease stress, condition of the scalp, and boost the strength of the hair roots. 

3. Manage Stress

Stress is a fact of life, but we can manage it by removing ourselves from stressful situations and finding ways to find tranquility to avoid stress. Daily meditation, walking or running 20-30 minutes a day, 15 -20 minute work out will release endorphins and raise serotonin levels and increase blood flow to your hair follicles.

4. Improve Your Diet

Your body is made of cells, healthy cells are generated by a healthy diet, which equal a healthy scalp. Drinking lots of water, eating living foods that are cell rich, like fruits and vegetables is the nutrients needed to restore hair follicles. 

5. Take supplements

When hair is thinning  it can cause even more stress. Supplements can be instrumental in quickly thickening hair. Supplements like B vitamins, biotin, Silica(horsetail) and Black Castor Oil have been helpful in growing hair back and thickening hair. 

Stimulating Scalp Massage Tips Using Mahogany Soul Products

Heat a bottle of Mahogany soul's, peppermint pattie Juju Oil

Step 1

Part hair in sections, apply Juju oil of your choice, my favorite is peppermint pattie

Starting at the hairline by your forehead, make small circles with your fingertips. Work your way around to the sides of your head and then to the back, still making the same small circles.

Step 2 

Once you are at the back of your head, work your way back up to the front, making circles with your fingertips.

Step 3 

Do this for about 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes at night.

Step 4

Be consistent with the scalp massages and you will feel the results.
